You (yes, you!) might be able to earn a Guinness World Record! Here's a primer on achieving geeky greatness.

You aren"t special. You should not expect to receive an award just for being you.
Chances are you don"t possess the natural ability to break the world record for the 100-meter dash. And you probably weren"t born on the extremes of the human bell curve that would allow you to claim the title of something like the "farthest eyeball pop." Also, it"s doubtful you possess enough eccentric dedication to hold the record for, say, the world"s largest collection of pizza-related items.
So, where does that leave you, the not-spectacularly gifted? The non-freakishly bizarre? What are youto do if youwant to become an official Guinness World Record holder?
Well, do you know how to play Angry Birds?
Guinness has made a reputation for itself by honoring alternatively commendable extremes—we"ve all seen the image of the world"s heaviest set of twins, no?
Thankfully (?), the organization has made the decision to democratize its awards even further in recent years by glorifyingfeats that involve passive activities with things all around us—things like consumer technology and video games! You can set the Guinness World record for texting really fast!
And here"s the best part: you can record your record-breaking attempts with your phone"s camera or webcam and upload them to Guinness"s website for quick adjudication. Right from your computer. For free.
Mom will finally be proud!
A Primer on Greatness
To begin your journey towards immortality, go to theGuinness Challengers websiteand click the "Pick Your Challenge" button. Once you find an achievable goal that captures your imagination, all you will have to do is documentyour record-breaking attempt on video. Your smartphone"s camera or computer webcam will suffice. (Note: for challenges that take place on the screen, such as video games, you cannot use an in-screen video capture, i.e. you must show yourself using the device in question.)
Before you make your attempt, be sure to read all the rules for your particular competition. Otherwise your attempt maybe disqualified. You will be able to find the rules in the "Challenge Rules" underneath the video box of your particular challenge. For example, in the "Highest Score on Pac-Man Championship Edition DX" challenge (current high score: 530,920 points), the rules are as follows:You must make your attempt on an unmodified console using unmodified controllers.Settings to be used are: difficulty - expert, map - championship I, time limit - 5 minutes.Your video must show the following: 1)The attempt in its entirety and 2) the display, console and controller used.
Feel free to mess up and begin again in your video—as long as the record is captured in full. There"s no need to offer up a polished video. Here is a fairly standard competition entry:
When your attempt is complete, you will need to register with the site—either by creating a new account or logging in via Facebook. Then, to upload the video of your attempt for adjudication, just click on the "Attempt this record" button above each competition.
Once you have uploaded your entry, it will have to be made official. Once a week, Guinness" "special adjudicators" will review all videos that claim to have broken the record in question and decree if a new record has indeed been made.
If your feat has been verified, congratulations! You are one of life"s winners! (Unfortunately, there is no monetary compensation—this is all for the Internet glory.) If you are unsuccessfull, Guinness allows you to suggest a challenge that might be more in your wheelhouse. Surely there is something you do better than others.
